Mayo Clinic describes whiplash as "a
neck injury that can occur during rear-
end automobile collisions." During a
rear end collision your seat belt keeps
your body still, your head is thrown
forward quickly and forcibly then just
as quickly thrown backwards causing
your ligaments muscles and joints to be
stretched beyond their healthy
movements. This movement damages
the soft tissues causing pain and
mobility issues. 45% of people with
chronic neck pain attribute the pain to a
past motor vehicle collision.
Although rear end crashes are a major
contributor to whiplash injuries, they
may also be incurred by contact sports,
snowboarding or skiing accidents,
stress from repetitive injuries on the job,
shaken baby syndrome, child abuse, or
slips and falls.
